Rake Race Strategy
If you are going to enter a rake race and make a serious attempt at winning first prize, there are many factors to consider to stop you going nuts (or bankrupt!). Below are a few points to consider:
Multi-Tabling
Some Rake-Races are about playing more hands than anyone else - so multi-tabling is essential in this case. Other Rake-Races simply measure the amount you rake - so you should strive to playas many tables as you possible can handle.
Rake the Cap
If rake is capped at a maximum $3 per hand, playing .05/.10 tables is not optimal as you will seldom reach the cap of $3. Play on tables where you will usually rake the cap if you enter a multi-way pot.
Play on Loose Tables
Loose players play more pots with marginal hands. The more pots there are per hour the more rake is generated. If you can handle playing against loose opponents play on tables with loose players (ideally loose passive, so you can take the pot away from them easily) and see more flops/pots while bleeding the spewmonkeys dry!
Use a HUD/Stats
Ideally you will be playing 6+ tables. Using a stats overlay HUD is a useful way to remind yourself of the tendencies of other players without having to remember everything they have done. As you add more tables this becomes essential as a basis for effective decision making.
Watch the Leaderboard
Keep an eye on the leaderboards if possible, especially if you are winning. If the players closest on your heels log in to play some tables, do likewise to maintain your lead. If you’re not around have some of your poker buddies let you know if your closest opponents are playing (hey, you gotta sleep sometime!)
Don’t Burn-Out, or Stress out
Eat well, sleep well - take regular breaks and keep an eye on your profits. It is quite likely that your hourly profit will dip if you play more tables than you are used to while competing in a rake-race. This is okay, and to be expected. Winning the rake-race should more than compensate you, and give you a nice average hourly winrate - espececially in conjunction with Rakeback.
Get Rakeback
As you will be raking hundreds or thousands of dollars for the poker room, you should strive to get yourself the best rakeback deal possible on the site running the rake race to maximise your profits. Rakeback deals range from 30-70% (on average). Remember: A breakeven player can become a profitable player simply by having a rakeback deal. . We recommend getting a rakeback deal here: Poker Rakeback Deals. Where Possible, the links on RakeRace.co.uk provide you with a rakeback / vip bonus account where possible.
